Have you met Master Jones?

Hello, hi and howdy.

Something is happening and it’s sweet, lovely, and all about sharing some love.

The delightful Kerri from Mrs Jones needs our help. Kerri and her son has to pop to Brisbane a few times in the next few months, with a longer stay after his op and ages of time to recover and get back on his feet. Kerri’s had to give up work to make this happen, and sadly, they will be hugely out of pocket.

We want the family focussing on recovery, not on icky money issues, so we are swinging together an online auction. Donations welcome – we are just sorting out how to collect them all – and then please buy when the auction opens.

To get in on all the info – click here and join in.

Thank you xxx

Support Small Win Big Cairns

So it’s been ages since we’ve caught up! How are you? How’s the fam bam? Bff? What have  I missed?

Things are crazy hectic in my world. Firstly, my apologies if you are waiting on me for anything. That old chestnut about when it rains it pours has happened. I’m flat out and I’m loving it, but it’s not getting shit done. The house is a mess. There is stuff everywhere waiting to go to homes, and it’s been way to hot to touch anything. Then I’m working, the B Man started prep (what a routine changer! That’s a whole other blog post right there.) I’m trying for some exercise to get this weight off, and get my b b bounce back.. and I’m pooped generally! And and and! But this post isn’t about that.supportsmall

This post is about #supportsmallwinbig. This campaign is all about small business, and in this case, in Cairns. I am now more than aware how hard it is to turn a buck in small business, so the two things I can do right now to help out is a) shop small wherever I can, and b) work collaboratively to make Small Business Week the best ever for small biz in our region.

You can like the campaign here (if that doesn’t work try www.facebook.com/supportsmallwinbigcairns – I have a feeling this will go viral!)

It’s a multi pronged campaign, hitting the street between Gordonvale – I see you Trolley Studio and Creative Spaces by Missmarci – and Palm Cove.

Our first priority is encouraging everyone to support small business and getting people to be conscious consumers.. (Did you know if everyone spent just an additional $10 per week in small businesses that would amount to an additional $23.5 million circulating in our economy each week or over $1.2 billion each year delivering thousands of new jobs?? STOP THE PRESS!) Underpinning this will be networking events, a marketing campaign, training and up-skilling, and workshops.

This is open to anyone to play! Small business – join us early to get in the know. Shoppers – start now. Get your training gear on and find the best small businesses you can. Then tell all your friends, family and strangers you meet in the street. Do it. It’s free and easy!

So far we are thinking a quick and easy ‘spend $50 in store, email the receipt, go in the draw for a huge flashy prize!’. Then there’s the ongoing #supportsmallwinbig random prizes that will happen during the week – which will actually be going between April 21 and May 21. Seriously, rewarded to shop? Shut up and take my cash!

We are pulling together a calendar of events so you all keep in the know. This baby can really boost your business if you are ready to rock and roll and join in the fun. Got an event you want to put on? Let us know and we can help with all sorts of things, including spreading the word.

Like our page, post and #hashtag. We are on insty too – at Supportsmallwinbig! Perhaps even offer special deals to people playing along? Share other business pages so your shoppers know who else is a small biz in town? (Did you know word of mouth is the most powerful tool in business? Get on it!)

Oh! And of course you want steak knives? We have steak knives! We are working on our media partners to a) talk this project up, and b) give you all a little discount incentive to advertise with them! Yes my friends. We even have a graphic designer or two with sweet deals to up your marketing skills, and get your name out there.

And if you are super keen – skill share, hold an event. Or donate a prize! Contact hello@smallbusinesscairns.com.au to chat about what you think you can do. There is still room on the organising committee if you have time and the passion. Also we drink wine and chat a lot – so it’s working the right way!

Our shoe string budget campaign is relying on word of mouth and social media. If you like the idea of it, jump on board. Please!

Anyway, lunch break is over. Peace out kids! Talk to you all soon

A slice of heaven! A snapshot of lovely local business – cut down from the last post!

You might remember around the FNQ Handmade Industry Awards – pulled together by the delightful Joey from Sweet Florence, I was dressed and decorated by local business – to promote them. Delvine – did my gorgeous dress I really need to wear again, Crystaleyes Jewellery by Design – Karen – did my bling. Ang at Wyld Ginger Hair Designers did my GORGEOUS hair – which reminds me – I need a new haircut… Ang hook me up sister? And last, and def not least, Siv from Izbits World did my make up!

Well Honey Tan and Wax was my go to for the tan. I did NO prep work (not recommended) and just turned up for the tan. And I felt mega sexy. It was the perfect colour. Lasted forever. I glowed! And it’s so true – brown fat is WAY hotter than white fat!!!!!!

10805561_10153363625289972_2775562927941717360_n.jpg

Anyhoo – so I was doing a search online, and made the decision to book on in for a facial with Honey to test them out. Also, I had to pop to the shop and do a last trip, so I could combine it.

Well. Best decision ever. The facial was divine. An hour of bliss. And a hand/arm/scalp massage. My skin felt amazing after. And just $75 – it was a bargain!  I repeat! Best facial ever!

Now, I have a few other facial favourites – around town so you have lots of choices! Serenity at the Avenue  at Edge Hill has always been high on my list. The day spa combo with the deep bath, wine, then massage or facial – SUPERB! Refresh City Day Spa is another winner. And they feature Eden & Wade‘s amazing work in their foyer!

Meet Chester – I think he would look great at your place. And then I could come over, sit and drink wine on it while we chat. Do it. Contact the girls. Drop our name. 😉

Then, I went off to Noa. The new menu by Justin – who incidentally is the brother of a girlfriend of mine.. we met on a mother’s group when I was preggers with Blake. And she lives in Brissy.. How small is this world? Really?

12217_956516194402161_1216447110006482533_n.jpg

The company was fantastic – however – binge drinking and those gals seem to go hand in hand. Anyhoo – luckily Noa had booze and plenty of it.

The new tapas menu is DIVINE! Well worth popping in – and if you are a little povo – go during happy hour! Do it. Be seen. Drink bubbly wine. Eat Tapas. Live a little!

If we are facey friends, you have prolly seen the photo’s. Seriously. Saved me getting drunk on NYE!!!!!! ❤

Now, over to you! Which local business do you love? Got some pics? A story? Tell it to us! Let us share your blog! And share ours please!!

Let’s love local. Keep the doors open. Keep them trading. We can’t survive on chain stores alone….

Peace out

The new year – the new journey. And a lot of local love xxxx

So the Can is closed. A few bits and pieces to tidy up, and it will be a memory. A legend. The talk at dinner parties for years to come. It was a whole lot of things for us, but I’m going to leave it at awesome.

So what now?

For TBC and her fam – Well I have this awesome job. It might only be mine for a little while, but I’m jumping in and giving it a red hot go while it’s in my hot little hands. And our family is breathing.

Handmade Cans

What for the Handmade Can brand? Well, who knows. I want it to live on. I want it to continue growing the local business world. However, it’s not my journey now. Watch this space.

In order to not see it die, let’s use the brand/social media/blog to sell up and share the word on local business. Shoot me a message and let me know who to blog about. In fact – blog it for me, add a few pics, and I’ll post it on up for you!!!

I’ll start!

So, after the hideous shop  pack up – the fucking rain made it miserable, and the heat made me almost self combust.. my skin was dying and I needed a pamper sesh desperately. So I booked it in.  And made it happen. Happy New Year end to me!!

Ho Ho Ho! All the Can goss – the Christmas edition!

Sunday morning. In our house that means both the tv and ipad are blaring kids shows, Steve is snoozing, Meisha is singing and I’m thinking..

Image-41.jpg

I’m not sure if you’ve heard the news, but you had better sit down and take a deep breath.

Handmade Cans is closing on Christmas Eve.

images

If you are heading in shopping, don’t be put off. In fact, get your rush on. Last chance buying! Before the fat man arrives, and handmade goes on holidays.

Bask in the amazing handmade. Support the stockists who have gone out of their way to support the Can Dream. Cheer them on!

Buy the pallet gear! The lights! The shop fitout! It’s all for sale! Everything!

Also, after stupidly heading to Central yesterday to shop, it’s quiet, pleasant and .. not whatever the fuck that was. I didn’t see many smiles – what is the reason for the season? Mass spending with no joy? That’s crap!

buy-less-this-Christmas-consumer-free-Christmas.jpg

You probably have some questions about this. Let me answer them as best I can.

The venue we chose had it’s ups and downs. Mostly, in the last few weeks, downs. The roof leaked a few weeks ago in a relatively small amount of rain, which has not been fixed. While I love an indoor water feature as much as the next person, water pouring through light fittings just doesn’t do it for me. And those clouds bring the wet season home to us. The season I love the best. However, now it brings drama and stress!! Boo!

The air-con’s have been dodgy at best. The ones in the back rooms have never worked. Fucked up our business plan big time, those rooms needed to earn us $$. Also, the parking we moved there for has disappeared with new tenants and the other ones using ours!!

So all up, the venue hasn’t worked and we are pulling the pin before it sinks our little family any further.

Handmade Cans has been a hotbed of amazing. Of dreamers. Of creatives. Every one who has played in the store has added something to the tapestry. Some knots, some colourful corners, some full of laughter, some full of angst. I’ve loved most minutes of it. All have just taught me lessons. Tough lessons. Great lessons. Some have shown me the generous nature of some humans – and how amazing people can be. If you were the angsty one – let me wish you peace, compassion and healing. If you were the joyous one – thank you!!! All were blessings!

wheredowego_oex_sub-648x288.jpg

‘Where to from here?’ is the next question. I honestly don’t know. I’m exhausted. Weary from the journey. The small business world. Managing all the personalities, expectations, rumours, drama, fun, laughter and dreams. Doing the bookwork – which is always complex and dramatic. Also – In case you missed it – I’m a awesome consumer. Being cash poor has killed my spirit. So I don’t have that answer right now. There too much going inside to be clear on that.

Cairns has seen a surge in handmade/creatives setting up shop, creating new markets, and making the scene buzz. And that makes me think you won’t miss out. And what will come after the Can will be new, different energy, and will take new steps into sharing the love of handmade, bespoke and the smaller businesses that keep people busy and afloat, and your space full of ooak goodies.

We’ll keep up the handmade love online. Siv from Izbits World has dragged the shop through the last few weeks (THANK YOU SIV!) and Kerri from Mrs Jones help admin the pages. They will keep posting and sharing the love.

So this week, all the stockists will pick up their stuff, and I’ll pay them out. For the last time. So many mixed emotions.

Then Boxing Day we will start the pack up. The clean up. I want it done quickly – I need a break with my family, and fuck me, the friends I never see anymore. I used to be out and about all the time! Drinking, dancing, laughing.. oh the old me – I miss you! I need a holiday badly. An online detox. A breather. A life reset. Some fun! Some laughter. Some emotional freedom. If you’ve ever owned a small biz, you know what I’m talking about. It’s all consuming.

You are welcome to come and help! I’ll post on the insty/facey when we are heading in. Also, come and drink some wine when it’s done on the floor. Remembering the dreams, the hopes, the wins, the best bits. Reflecting, then dribbling on in a drunken way!!!! No photo’s at this event 😉

download.jpg

And I can release, and rest. Recover. Regroup. Be grateful for every bit of the puzzle.

Housekeeping

Anyone with stuff at our house/in storage/left in the shop, I’ll use some of the few days off I have to go through it all, label it, and then put it in our carport. Please feel the angst I have about this. I’ll be doing a cleanse of our house once we are all packed up in the shop – we have a house full of stock people have left with us and not picked up. Some is my fault – working 6 days a week, with a huge family, hasn’t left me wanting to spend my few spare minutes dropping off, or sorting, it all out. Call me selfish, but I wanted to see my family, smell my kidlets, laugh a bit, and not be all about stock/the shop every fucking day. Some is just human nature. However, the free storage is over. I need my house back. So I’ll be emailing, then donating.

New year, fresh house, new dreams, new plans, new directions.

Peace out – love to you and yours!
